One issue, (a rather large one), is that the title of this book doesn't really reflect what the story should be about, an orchestra. These novels have a heavier war-torn theme which La's Orchestra does not. La's Orchestra Saves the World is an inspiring, quiet, light read and not at all like the other WWII novels we've read such as The Nightingale, The Book Thiefor Suite Francaise. She grabs the opportunity to move out of London and into the country to make a fresh start and that is where her adventures begin. Also fortunate, Bet, the daughter of the Van Lews, saw how bright and intelligent Mary was. Her father lived nearby, working as a blacksmith. Her mother worked as a house slave in the Van Lews mansion. She fortunately grew up knowing both of her parents. It centers around a young woman named La, short for Lavender, who finds herself without her husband and no real plans for her future. Mary Bowser was born into slavery in Richmond, Virginia before the Civil War. La's Orchestra Saves the World is a stand alone novel set in England before, during and after WWII.
